INFRASTRUCTURE: New system runs on a computer under someone's desk, IT confirms
The machine was identified during a layout change, when the desk was moved and a ten-meter network cable appeared.

notice: This is satire. Names, companies and telemetry are invented. Any resemblance to your environment is your problem.
The machine responsible for one of the company's daily-use systems was located on Wednesday morning under a desk, behind a cardboard box, with a sticky note reading "do not turn off" stuck to the front panel.
According to the official inventory, the system in question runs in a virtualized, monitored environment with a daily backup.
"The inventory is correct for the system we pay for," explained the infrastructure analyst. "The thing is, there is a second system, very similar, that nobody was paying for and that therefore never made it into the inventory. It does the same thing, only for another area."
The area in question said it was unaware of the equipment's origin and classified the discovery as a "documentation opportunity."
The machine was kept on, now with an asset tag. The sticky note stays in place as a precaution.
Satire. Names, areas, and numbers are invented. The sticky note, they say, is real somewhere in the world right now.
