The arithmetic of meetings

A one-hour meeting with eight people costs eight hours of work. The same decision in writing would cost twenty minutes from one person and an "ok" from the other seven. It is not a matter of efficiency: it is fourth-grade arithmetic, and that is why it hurts so much.
